Captain America: Civil War

So, Civil War, eh? Probably the most anticipated movie of 2016, or, at least, one of them. It's probably been mine, at least, I don't think much else stacks up after this. Maybe Rogue One, but we'll have to see. But anyway, yeah, Captain America: Civil War is arriving in theaters today, after what seems like ages after the announcement that this was where they were taking the Cap movie saga. Did it live up to all of its hype? In short terms...fuck yes, it did.

To sum up the plot in a non-spoiler way, the world is very displeased with the Avengers at the moment. After the destructive battles in places like New York, Washington D.C., and Sokovia, while the world thanks their efforts in keeping the bad guys out, they're displeased with all the innocent casualties, some even downright angry, since most of them were loved ones, etc. The United Nations takes this into account and sends Sec. of State Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt) to propose the Sokovia Accords to the team: a set of rules and regulations that would basically put the Avengers under the control of the governments of the world, sending them where they see fit. Some people on the team are ready to sign, such as Iron Man, War Machine, Vision, and Black Widow, but others, like Cap, Falcon, and Scarlet Witch, are not so ready. Meanwhile, Cap's old friend Bucky has been framed for a huge terrorist attack in Vienna. So, the entire team begins to fight for what's right, while Cap struggles to find out who framed Bucky, in this 2 and a half hour piece of magnificence.

I'm going to be blunt and honest with you guys, this movie is fucking great. This is easily the best Marvel movie we've had since Guardians of the Galaxy, and some people have even stated that this is their pick for the best MCU movie, ever. While I'm not so sure about that, perhaps a second viewing will solidify it, I won't doubt that this is a refreshing thing to see, especially after such a year as last year where our two Marvel movies were good at best. I gotta say that this movie's highest point is the story and screenplay. The story is so straightforward, no confusing sub plot points, no things threw out of nowhere, it's just honest and true about what it is, and it's accented so well by its screenplay. In classic Marvel fashion, it knows when it needs to be dramatic, and it knows when it needs to be humorous, and it nails both with flying colors.

And the casting, oh my god, another home run by the Marvel casting department. I could sit here for hours and sing the praises of the regulars like Chris Evans, Robert Downey, Jr, and Scarlett Johansson, but I'll spare you and just talk about the newbies, and someone who I think improved upon their role since the last time we saw them. The latter falls into the hands of Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. First and foremost, he's not the glum soldier he was in The Winter Soldier, he feels more like Bucky, albeit, a slightly damaged Bucky that still needs work. And the friendship between him and Chris Evans's Cap just feels so natural and so charismatic, it's a really great job on their part.

Next is Chadwick Boseman as our first new guy, King T'Challa/Black Panther. I think I've got a new favorite after his performance. Just, everything about his fighting style mixed with his views and how he kept himself composed just worked me over, the same way that Batman's code of honor always got me. Plus the casting part was on point, and I love it.

And, finally, the one guy everybody's been waiting to see, Spider-Man. Well, you can stop holding your breath, and you might want to release it into a scream, because Tom Holland is easily the best on-screen Spider-Man we've ever had, as well as the best on-screen Peter Parker. He's witty, nerdy, and kinda quriky just like Parker should be, and he doubles that up as Spidey with that added extra bit of smart-assness that Spidey is supposed to have. He was badass, and that's all you need to know.

Captain America: Civil War is a definite breath of fresh air that harkens back to what made the Marvel timeline so clever and so exciting when it first dropped with Iron Man, through to the first Avengers, and so on. It's fun as fuck, and it's a definite must see for everyone. It gets a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars, and I can't WAIT to see where they take the franchise next.
