Mad Max: Fury Road
I'm part of a group that expected this movie to be underwhelming. Thank god I was wrong.
Mad Max: Fury Road is simply amazing. It's been so long since I've had this much fun with an action movie of this caliber. It keeps you hooked and on the edge of your seat from beginning to end, and I'm so happy that in this era of cookie-cutter Bond-wannabe action flicks, one can actually rise to the top like this one has.
Fury Road is the fourth movie in the Mad Max movie series, directed by George Miller. The last movie to be released in the franchise was 1985's Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, with Mel Gibson as the titular Max character. In Fury Road, however, Gibson is replaced by the fantastic Tom Hardy, still riding off of his performance as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, however I believe his role as Max easily gives Bane a run for its money. Also seen in this entry are series newcomer Charlize Theron as Furiosa and Nicholas Hoult as Nux, as well as a familiar face from the original Mad Max: Hugh Keays-Byrne as this movie's villain Immortan Joe (Keays-Byrne previously played Toecutter in the original).
To summarize the plot: Immortan Joe is the leader of a small desert community known as the Citadel, stocked with fresh water and gasoline, which Joe uses to taunt the people under his rule. Our main character Max is captured by his goons and is used as a blood bag for one of his drivers, Nux. Meanwhile, his lead driver, Imperator Furiosa, embarks on another trip to retrieve more fuel for the Citadel. However, when she makes a different turn among the path, Joe comes to the conclusion that Furiosa has taken his wives that he uses to make children. Max is sent out with Nux to capture Furiosa, and he eventually breaks free and joins Furiosa as they race across the desert to defeat Joe and take over the Citadel once and for all.
I can't stress enough how amazing this movie is. The filmography, the acting, the score, everything comes together in one perfect package of action, not to mention, it was one of the best 3D experiences I've had since seeing Spy Kids 3 when I was like 8 (things actually came out of the screen!!! This is amazing!!!!!!!). If I can come up with any thing wrong with this film, I'd say it's the lack of clarity to who the main character is. Max's name is on the poster, yes, but it's hard to deny that Charlize Theron's Furiosa largely carried the film. More Max would have been nice to see, because I definitely do enjoy Tom Hardy's gruff voice and serious tone he takes with this character. Who's Mel Gibson, again?
Yes, please, PLEASE, go see Mad Max: Fury Road. I cannot stress it enough, because you will be blown back in your seat by this, I'm not even kidding. If this is a sign to how 2015's big return of many various franchises, then we're in for an amazing treat.
4.5 out of 5 stars. Simply an awe-inspiring piece of cinema.
