Lady Bird
Ahhh, the good old coming of age drama. How we missed you. You've been through hell and back, you've seen decades of prosper (1980s) and decades of dismay (pretty much everything after the 1980s), but you never seem to give up. I feel like people need to give you more credit as a whole. For some people, you defined generations, and I feel like some just can't understand that.
All that is why when I heard a coming of age drama like Lady Bird had broken Rotten Tomatoes records, I was shocked. How good could such a film be that it's taking these critics by storm? What did A24 accomplish that other studios didn't? I had to see it myself...and I was not disappointed at all.
Lady Bird is the charming story of a teenager named Lady Bird who is trying to fight her way through her last year of high school. Challenged by the pressures of friends, popularity, love, and a messy household, all she wants is to find the best version of herself that she can, while feeling trapped by her average Sacramento life. Throughout the course of the movie, she battles all of her struggles in such a beautiful way, finding herself through the process and making peace with all of the problems which plague her.
Frankly, the story is cheesy and simple, but honestly, it doesn't even matter. This film in its simplicity is a wonderful piece of cinema. It's stricken with a wonderful view of teenage life, which will give pretty much everyone a little dab of familiarity to their own experiences during that time of life. It's truly greater than the sum of its parts.
You might think that such a film would play it straight, but in fact, it's peppered throughout with choice little humorous moments that really bring it together. Boosting these scenes are the support of a fantastic cast, made up of people who know exactly what they're doing and how to do it. I wish I could give everyone involved an award of some sort, some kind of prize for bringing it together.
Lady Bird is a refreshing masterpiece that truly breathes new life into the coming of age genre. It's so good that I can barely even put it into words, it's an experience, not one that can be shared well. I'll give it a 9.7 out of 10, and a firm recommendation. Go see it end experience it yourself.
